Specimen Loading
To begin, check that the column ion pump vacuum is approximately 4x10-5 Pa or better. Vacuum meters are located in the power supply rack behind the microscope.
Set the goniometer tilt to 0° and lock the SEG.
After loading your grid into the holder, tap on the holder to check that the grid is secure. Check the o-ring for dust or lint and remove with the lens paper.
Align the pin on the holder with the notch in the goniometer and push the specimen holder into the opening.
Push the holder until it seats. Stop pushing and gently twist the holder clockwise only 2° until it stops. A valve will open making a loud clicking sound.
After a moment, the green light on the SEG will come on. The light will remain on for a moment and then go out again. This sequence will be repeated several times during the vacuum pumping cycle. 5-10 minutes is required before the green light will stay lit for 30-45 seconds.
At this time turn the holder clockwise another ~20° until it stops, and slowly guide the holder into the SEG. Do not release the holder until it is fully seated in the goniometer. Monitor the chamber vacuum and minimize vacuum drop during insertion by moving SLOWLY.
Specimen Unloading
To unload the specimen holder, pull the holder straight out until it stops. Twist it counterclockwise until it stops. Now gently pull and twist slightly to release the holder.
